Mississippian-native Kate Teague has once again stoked the indie-folk fires with her latest single, ‘In Our Element’ - a ballad-esque delve into the her convoluted romantic world segwaying between the likes of Sharon Van Etten and Lana Del Rey. Having grasped the attention of various music critics last year with her first handful of singles ‘Good To You’, ‘Gilly’, and ‘Low Life’, Teague signalled a continuation of this new age of intricate indie-folk music rooted in rhythmic americana tropes.
Set against the backdrop of light acoustic guitar refrains and groovy rhythmic beats, including some quaking guitar notes sporadically littered, Teague deploys her introspective take on the emotional state of romantic affairs. Spilling her views on unrequited love and fantastical romantic relationships with unattainable people, Teague’s vocal delivery proves nothing flashy or over-the-top, but suitably subdued and non-chalant for the easily-relatable and empathetic listener.
Keeping within the same vein as many of her contemporaries, from Soccer Mommy, to boygenius, to Sunflower Bean, Teague has begun carving her way into this particular mold with this latest heartfelt single. Whilst the vocal delivery could use some variation amongst her range and tone, her debut LP just around the corner should be on any highly-anticipated list for those fans seeking for something emblematic of this new era of indie-folk, spearheaded by such pertinent female songwriters.
Happy International Women’s Day for all the aforementioned women singer-songwriters leading the way in their respective genres - here’s to you!
Kate Teague's debut LP will be released later this year via Muscle Beach Records.
